Comprehensive Analysis of Elderly Fall Mortality Rates in 60 Countries: "Continuous Increase Expected by 2040."

Professor Kim Sun-young of the Department of Family Medicine at Kyunghee University Hospital received the Best Poster Award as the only Asian recipient at the 20th European Geriatric Medicine Society (EuGMS) held in Valencia, Spain, from September 18 to 20.

Professor Kim Sun-young analyzed mortality rates related to falls among the elderly using WHO death data and predicted the risk of falls until 2040 for her poster presentation. The research topic was "Global Trends in Fall-Related Mortality Rates Among the Elderly in 60 Countries from 2011 to 2021," and she reported that a continuous increase in falls is expected among women, elderly individuals aged 85 and older, and in upper-middle-income countries. She also emphasized the importance of setting goals to reduce fall-related mortality rates and actively implementing intervention and prevention programs.

Professor Kim Sun-young stated, "Falls are a significant issue that increases mortality rates among the elderly, and greater attention is needed in nursing facilities and hospitals, along with the establishment of continuous strategies." She added, "I hope this research will help reduce fall-related mortality rates among the elderly, and I will continue to maintain interest and efforts to contribute to the preservation of health in older adults through various studies in the future."

The European Geriatric Medicine Society (EuGMS) is a prestigious international conference in the field of geriatrics that has been held annually since 2001, providing a platform for presenting research findings and sharing opinions. It is the largest conference in the field of geriatrics, with participation from over 40 countries worldwide.
